You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. Our friend’s horse, Jammer, was recently diagnosed with cancer. Don’t worry—he’s doing great post-surgery and chemo injections. In fact, he’s been soaking up the extra attention (and treats) so much that he’s gotten a little chunky. But this isn’t just a story about a horse. It’s a story about leadership, patience, and persistence.
Jammer recently became dehydrated and refused to drink water. So, our friend had a clever idea: put his favorite treats into the bottom of his water bucket, hoping he’d drink to get to them. And what did the horse do?
He picked up the bucket with his teeth, sloshed all the water out, and munched on the treats—completely bypassing the point. It was a literal, hilarious, and slightly frustrating example of the old saying in action.
As leaders, managers, parents, mentors, and friends, we often see the path someone should take. We guide, coach, connect, and encourage. We lead them to the water, but we can’t make them drink. Still, we try. And we keep trying. Because that’s what we do. So here’s to everyone out there doing the quiet, persistent work of leading others to their potential—even when they tip the bucket over.
Keep going. You’re making a difference.
